Musicians Around the World to Perform at LA Phil in April

April will be another eventful month at the LA Phil, with a variety of musicians from all over the world bringing their talents to the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

First up on April 2, jazz legend Miles Davis will be collaborating with arranger Gil Evans for the show “Still Ahead.”  The trumpeter will also be joined by special guests Terence Blanchard, Sean Jones, and Peter Eskrine.

To celebrate his 59th year in the music industry, crooner Johnny Mathis will perform his hits with the LA Phil on April 4.

Next on April 7 is “Chamber Music: All-Mozart,” an event that will feature a group of only eight musicians, including clarinetist David Howard performing music by, you guessed, the late, great Mozart.

Fans of German culture must mark April 8 on their calendars, because that’s when Concerto Köln, an instrumental ensemble from Cologne will perform music from the Baroque period composed by greats such as Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, and Telemann.

If you still haven’t gotten your fill of Handel and Vivaldi, the LA Phil will be performing works from both masters, including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, April 10-12.  The amazing Emmanuelle Haïm will be conducting.

April 11-12 will see the return of the Los Angeles Master Chorales show of “The Water Passion.”  Conducted by Oscar and Grammy winner Tan Dun, this concert was first performed in 2005 and has been talked about ever since.

Renowned pianist Hélène Grimaud will be performing a recital April 14 that will feature works by composers such as Brahms and Beiro.

Speaking of Johannes Brahms, the 19th century composer’s music will also be featured in the show “Brahms Fourth” (April 17-19).  Principal Concertmaster and violinist Martin Chalifour will not only perform Brahms’s Tragic Overture and Symphony No. 4, but also Josef Suk’s Fantasy.

Olivier Latry, who is not only one of the official organists at Notre Dame in Paris, but a teaching and recording artist as well, will be performing a recital on April 19.  His program will feature works by French composers such as Franck and Cochereau.

Finally, the talented young musicians who make up The Colburn Orchestra will have their chance to show off what they have been learning when they perform works by Stravinsky with conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen on April 24.
